Bisset School is named in memory of Judge Athelstan Bisset, a respected community leader. Bisset was a city alderman and the first judge of both Edmonton's Family Court and the Juvenile Court of Alberta. Judge Bisset was concerned with individuals and said, "a judge should never lose sight of the fact that children are different - their motivation is different and each one needs special treatment".

Bisset School opened in September 1989, at Fulton Place. On January 29, 1990 the new facility was ready for students. The official opening was held February 26, 1990, with approximately 400 students and guests in attendance.

In August 2004 Bisset was named by Today's Parent magazine in their first annual Top 40 Schools in Canada as an All Round Cool School.
